NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee State women’s track and field senior Clairwin Dameus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) earned a gold medal in the long jump to highlight day one of the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championship at Edward S. Temple Track on Friday. The Tigerbelles are in second place with 39.5 points after the first day of competition.

TSU captured the top two spots in the long jump with Dameus turning in an outdoor season-best distance of 6.38m (20’11.25”). The distance broke the OVC Outdoor Championship record of 6.26m (20'6.5") set by Middle Tennessee's Sherrie Bingham at the 1988 OVC Championship. Amber Hughes (Atlanta, Ga.) earned second place for a silver medal in the long jump with a distance of 6.13m (20’1.5”) on the day.

In the high jump, Cyra Beard (Jackson, Tenn.) jumped her way to a silver medal after clearing the bar at 1.81m (5'11.25"). Sharmil Whyatt (Vilseck, Germany) also had a good showing in the high jump, tying for fourth thanks to a jump of 1.72m (5'7.75").

The Tigerbelles picked up additional points in the discus as Angel Davis (Decateur, Ga.) picked up a sixth place finish with a distance of 43.75m (143’6”) and Daimer Gordon (Ellenwood, Ga.) took seventh with a toss of 41.64m (136’7”). Also in the field events, Dameus earned fifth in the javelin with a distance of 36.75m (120'7").

TSU will send three student-athletes to tomorrow’s finals for the 100m hurdles. In the prelims, Hughes turned in the top time in 13.34, with Crystal Williams (Gainesville, Fla.) taking third in 13.90 and Maya Ramsey (Atlanta, Ga.) in 14.21.

Dameus went on to turn in the second-best time of the day in the 100m prelims in 11.84, which was a career best.

Beard is in second place through four events in the heptathlon with 3,038 points. The event concludes tomorrow with the long jump, javelin and 800m.

Dameus and Kayla Pryor (Ellenwood, Ga.) clocked in at 1:02.14 and 1:01.20 in the prelims of the 400m hurdles to advance to tomorrow’s finals. Hughes will also run in the finals of the 200m on Saturday after posting a time of 24.23 in the prelims, which was good enough for fourth on the day.

Christian Pryor (Ellenwood, Ga.) captured seventh in the prelims of the 800m with a season-best 2:11.79 finish to move onto the finals.
