Women's Tennis Stung by Hornets


NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State women's tennis team hosted Alabama State Sunday morning at the Currey Tennis Center where the Hornets defeated TSU, 5-2.

The Tigers (6-1) suffered its first loss of the season as ASU picked up its first win, now boasting a 1-3 record. 

The day began with the doubles point, which the Hornets quickly clinched on the first two courts. Veterans Ani Popiashvili and Pragati Natraj finished 2-6 on court two, leaving the doubles point in the hands of freshman Morgan Cage and Atlanta native Phoenix Gandy, who fell 6-3 to a pair of Hornets from Slovakia, Gabriela Lackova and Lea Krajcovicova. 

Continuing onto singles, the Tigers had some hard matchups and had to fight for each point against the veteran team in Alabama State.

The first three singles points went to ASU after beating Big Blue on courts one, two and four. Aarushi Kakkar a newcomer for TSU, won the Tigers its first point beating Gabriela Lackova 7-6 (4-0), 7-6 (3-0) on court three. 

The final win of the match went to Natraj at No. 6 after forcing a tie-breaker against ASU freshman Margo Muller. In a point-for-point battle, Natraj finally pushed ahead by two, winning 6-3, 5-7, 12-10.

Next up, the women's team will host MVSU in a doubleheader Friday, Feb. 16 at 2 p.m., and again at 5 p.m.
