Tigers Close Opening Weekend Undefeated

MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- The Tennessee State women’s tennis team swept its second doubleheader of opening weekend Sunday at the Whitehaven Tennis Center, defeating Mississippi Valley State.

“Mississippi Valley State played very hard and competed well," said head coach Monroe Walker. "The thing that I was most impressed by is that they played fair and never gave up. The coach is raising fine young men and women, which you do not see that often these days. We just played a little bit better than them this weekend. I wish them the best of luck this season."

The Tigers won games across two courts in doubles, easily taking the doubles point. Returners Ani Popiashvili and Pragati Natraj struck first at No. 1, defeating Mississippi Valley State's Shaneka Hubbard and Dealma Cole, 6-1, for their first doubles win of the morning. Shortly after, freshman Morgan Cage and Abhilasha Vishwanath shutout Jailynn May and Maya Murry, 6-0 to clinch the point.

The Tigers quickly clinched the match in singles play, running off straight-set wins on five of the courts to put the Devils away.

In the day’s second match, TSU made quick work of MVSU, shutting out the Devils 4-0.

Once again, the Tigers took the doubles point with shutout wins.

Big Blue continued its momentum in singles play, as the team took seven shutout sets, and another by a score of 6-2. Abhilahsa Vishwanath took her first dual match singles win of the year, defeating Traci Carter 6-0, 6-0.

The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. when Big Blue will host Rhodes.
