TSU Women's Tennis Falls to EIU

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State women’s tennis team was unable to slow down Eastern Illinois, suffering a 6-1 defeat at Hadley Park in Ohio Valley Conference action on Saturday. Sophomore Abhilasha Vishwanath secured TSU’s point with a singles victory.

“The women didn't play bad today,” TSU Head Coach Monroe Walker III said. “Abhilasha had a huge win at No. 4. You could tell she didn't want to lose and left it all out there. (Phyllicia) Hemphill played a great match at No. 6. She didn't quite get the win, but she forced a third set. I think she played the best match of the year for her. She fought to the end and had great energy. Ladies have to match the intensity of the other teams and keep high energy once match gets tough.”

Eastern Illinois jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on TSU (6-6, 0-6 OVC) by taking the doubles point. The Panthers won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles on the day. In a No. 3 doubles match that went unfinished, Vishwanath and Ashia Jones were leading EIU’s Emily Pugachevsky and Srishti Slaria by a 4-2 margin.

At the No. 4 singles position, Vishwanath battled Slaria in a three-set victory. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Vishwanath bounced back for wins of 6-4 and 10-8 to secure the victory.

In another back-and-forth match, Phyllicia Hemphill forced a third set, eventually falling to Pugachevsky.

The Tigers will return to action with a road match at Alabama A&M on Thursday, April 6.
