Women's Tennis Opens Season at HBCU Invitational

SETTING THE STAGE: The Tennessee State women’s tennis team will begin its fall season at the HBCU Invitational in Atlanta.

RETURNERS: TSU returns the entire team from a year ago and added two highly ranked high school players to the team. Ani Popiashvili was last years’ leader in doubles wins with 13. Abhilasha Vishwanath and Phyllicia Hemphill return as the leaders in singles wins with 12 apiece.

LAST SEASON: Last season the women won two conference matches for the first time in TSU history. The Tigers beat Belmont 5-1 to win their first conference match since 2001. The women’s tennis team went on to beat SEMO in the season finale ending their season with a 9-11 record.

2015 HBCU INVITATIONAL: Ani Popiashvili and Pragati Natraj paired up to bring home an HBCU championship in the B Flight doubles bracket. Not to be out done, Taylor Patterson added a singles championship in Flight C.

UP NEXT: The Tigers will compete in the Missouri State Open Sept. 30 through Oct. 1, in  Springfield, Mo.
