TSU Women’s Tennis Dominant in Win Over Arkansas Pine Bluff

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State women’s tennis team swept Arkansas Pine Bluff on Saturday afternoon, securing a 7-0 victory at the Hadley Park Bubble in the spring opener.

“Great win for the ladies,” TSU Head Coach Monroe Walker III said. “They dominated in every aspect today. They came out strong and didn’t let up. I was very pleased with their performance.”

Freshmen Ani Popiashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Pragati Natraj (Bangalore, Ind.) picked up a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, and Phoenix Gandy (Atlanta, Ga.) and Phyllicia Hemphill (Nashville, Tenn.) earned an identical 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Playing at the top single slot, Natraj was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Tia Thomas. The other four singles matches went to TSU by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Vishwanath defeated Brently Sargent at No. 2, while Taylor Patterson (Munford, Tenn.) picked up her team-leading eighth singles win at No. 3. Gandy and Hemphill won by the same 6-0, 6-0 scores in their matches at No. 4 and No. 5 singles.

The Tigers are back in action on Feb. 19 at Dayton.
