--- Tennessee State charged back from eight strokes back on the final day of the Ohio Valley Conference Championship to catch Eastern Illinois and grab a share of eighth place. The Tigers trailed EIU by seven strokes with three players remaining to play the final three holes. TSU’s Morgan Rood, Savannah Szozda and Kalee Rhodes teamed to play those holes at 3-over, while the Panthers final three played the same holes at 10-over.

Rhodes carded the team low on Wednesday with a 7-over, 79, and started the comeback with three straight pars to close out the round, out playing her opponent from EIU by three strokes. Szozda followed with a par on 18 after scoring bogey’s on the previous two holes. The Panthers number two golfer struggled over the remaining holes and shot 4-over.

Rood went bogey-par on 16 and 17, respectively, while her EIU counterpart went par-bogey. The final threesome, including a golfer from Morehead State, walked up the fairway of the par-4, 18th, with the EIU lead over TSU at two strokes. Rood’s approach shot landed on the green 13 feet above the pin, allowing the junior to two-putt for par. The Panther’s top golfer came up short of the green on her approach shot and needed an extra putt for a double bogey, giving the Tigers a share of the eighth place tie.

The finish is the highest for the Tigers at the OVC Championship in school history. Today’s round of 324 was also the lowest team total at the Championships, as well as their tournament total of 1,013. The 54-hole score eclipsed the 2017 total of 1,016.

Rood and Szozda finished the day with identical 8-over, 80’s, to join Rhodes and Trinidy Pate as countable scores for the Tigers. Pate posted her best round of the three day event with an 85. The score edged out Haleigh Riley, who also fired her best round of the event with an 87.

Rood, a junior athletically, played in her final OVC Championship. The Lynnwood, Wash. product will forego her final season with the Tigers due to early graduation from Tennessee State.
