MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. --- The Tennessee State women’s golf program closed out the season with a ninth place finish at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship on Wednesday. The Tigers cut strokes off their previous round for the second consecutive round as they carded a 337, 14 strokes better than round two.

Freshman Carson Racich matched her day two score with a 6-over, 78, to finish 20-over for the tournament. Racich placed 20th, marking the highest finish for a Tiger in program history at the OVC Championship.

Racich suffered an unfortunate break on the par-4, 7th. After hitting into the fairway bunker, Racich pulled her approach shot to the left side of the green, hitting an opponent’s bag who had walked onto the green. Her ball ricocheted into the green side bunker under the back side lip, resulting in a double bogey.

The freshman ran into trouble off the tee box on the next hole, the par-4, 8th. Racich hit a tree on the left side of the fairway on her drive setting a blind shot out of the woods. Racich hit a 3-hybrid out of the forest, over the water and onto the green setting up a two-putt for par. The Loves Park, Ill. continued to get stronger as a putt for eagle on No. 9 lipped out before sinking the birdie putt.

Morgan Rood chopped six strokes from her previous round, carding an 83. On the par-3, 16th, Rood hit a 6-iron short of the green. The sophomore hit a flop shot to a foot of the pin and converted the putt for par.

Dhani McDowell continued her streak of cropping strokes from her previous round for the fourth tournament in a row. McDowell posted a scoring 87 during the final round. The freshman set a new career low for a 54-hole tournament with a 271.

Haleigh Riley recorded the final scoring round for the Tigers with an 89, five strokes better than her Tuesday’s score. On the par-5, 4th, Riley hit her tee shot into the weeds on the left side of the fairway. The sophomore punched out on her second shot and was left with 89 yards after her third shot. Riley knocked the blind, uphill shot to a foot of the hole to set up a tap-in putt to save par.

Savannah Szozda missed out on scoring for the Tigers for the third round, but cut six strokes off her round two score.
