Merkel, Needleman Named Co-OVC Golfers of the Week
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Kelly Merkel and Sarah Needleman have been named adidas Co-Golfers of the Week by the Ohio Valley Conference office on Wednesday. Merkel and Needleman, both juniors, shared individual honors in a duel match versus Lipscomb last week. The Tiger duo became the first women golfers to earn the OVC honor in program history.
The classmates shot a 5-over, 77, as wind-chill temperatures dropped to the low 40’s on Friday afternoon at the McCabe Golf Course. The two scores helped the Tigers shoot a school record 323, besting its previous low by three strokes.
”The conditions were brutal at best at times,” said head coach Parrish McGrath. “I am proud of their tenacity, in the way they finished up a good round of golf in very difficult conditions.”
Merkel, a Columbia, Tenn. product, used a duel-high 11 pars and a birdie for her 5-over, while Needleman finished with a career best by hitting 10-of-14 fairways, 11 greens and using 33 putts. The Fishers, Ind. native led the field with three birdies on the day.
“I am happy they can see the fruits of their labor,” McGrath said. “Both golfers have worked very hard through the years they have been at TSU and it is a great step for our program.”
The Tigers will return to action in the spring with four tournaments, including the Big Blue Invitational, and a duel match.
