Golf Takes Part in MLK Service Day

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Both the men’s and women’s golf teams spent Martin Luther King Day giving back to the community as part of TSU’s MLK Day of Service.

The team’s took part in a work day at McKissack Middle School cleaning up the local school. Coach Parrish McGrath’s golfers teamed up with other organizations around the area to help promote service to the community.

“Our groups came together as one in making something happen,” said coach McGrath. “Working together as a team, as a unit and making it happen.”

The organizations helped clear out and renovate a closet to make it usable again. The organizations also painted walls inside the Nashville school.

“I really enjoy community service and I think it was a great thing for our team to participate in and help our community,” said sophomore Kelly Merkel about the event. “It’s a great honor to be able to help and do community service and knowing that Dr. King did such a great thing for our country and it’s great  that we can do it in his honor.”

Monday’s event promotes McGrath’s well rounded student athlete ideal.

“It’s important not just to do it here in our community but it’s important to make that a part of your life,” McGrath said. “So if you don’t have something in your life to help other people it’s a good way for our athletes to do that.”
