Tigerbelles to compete in OVC Indoor Championship

Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University Tigerbelles will compete in the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship from Feb. 25-26. The championship is hosted by Eastern Illinois inside the Lantz Arena in Charleston, Ill.

The competition will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday with the women's high jump, men's weight throw and long jump. The final day of competiton is Saturday, Feb. 26, with the last event on the track, the 4x400m relay, slated to start at 3:15 p.m.

OVC teams competing in women's track include: Austin Peay State, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Murray State, Southeast Missouri State, and Tennessee Tech.

The Tigerbelles will rally around Gabrielle Todd and two-time defending indoor long jump champion Martinique Guice for a shot at the crown. Guice enters the meet with the best long jump mark in the OVC with a leap of 19" 11. She posted the jump at the TSU Invite and it has held ever since. Todd's time in the 400m, 56.56 seconds, ranks fourth overall in the conference.

Andrea Fenderson and the 4x400m relay team also rank among the top three in the OVC entering the meet. Fenderson is third in the long jump rankings with her best vault of 18" 5.25. The 4x400m relay team held the fastest time for several weeks during the indoor season but is now third with their time of 3:50.35.

Last year, TSU hosted the 2010 OVC Indoor Track and Field Championship finishing seventh in the overall standings. Guice won the long jump with Todd taking third in the high jump (5"04.25) and fifth in the 400m (57.36 seconds).

Other returning Tigerbelles and relay squads that posted points in last year's championship include: Daniecce Ward, Kya Riley, the distance medley relay and the 4x400m relay teams. RECAP...

The Tigerbelles last indoor competition to prepare for this year's championship was on Feb.12 at Middle Tennessee State's Valentine Invitational.  Second place finishes in the open 400m and the 4x400m relay highlighted TSU's overall performance.

Todd finished runner-up in the 400m with a time of 56.92 seconds. She posted her second fastest of the season. Ashley Taylor picked up fourth in the event with a clocking of 59.61 seconds. Both finished back-to-back in the 200m. RECAP...
