Cross Country Teams Finish 5th at Powerade Invitational

Chattanooga, Tenn. – The Tennessee State University men and women cross country teams opened the 2009 season with both squads finishing fifth in the team standings at the Powerade Invitational.

UT Chattanooga hosted the race on Friday (9/11) at the Mocassin Bend Race Course in Chattanooga, Tenn. 

In the women's final standings, Middle Tennessee State won the two-mile competition with 41 points edging Chattanooga (42). Kennesaw State (48), Mercer (98) and TSU (150) rounded out the team scoring.

Freshman Apryl Johnson in her debut finished first for TSU and 30th among collegiate runners with a time of 14:37. Sisters Jaleeca (14:49) and Jasmine Jacobs (14:59) followed with 32 and 33rd place finish. Rounding out the team scoring was Pia Perez (36 - 16:24) and Kenisha Ladler (16:33).

On the men's side, Middle Tennessee State captured the 5K meet with 28 points. Chattanooga finished second with 48 points with Kennesaw State (55), Mercer (81) and TSU (149) completing the team standings.

Chris Hobbs was the first Tiger to complete the course, finishing 36th (27) with a time of 18:17. Phillip Myton (19:31) followed second on the team finishing 41st overall. Rodney Darden (23:49), Printence McMurtrey (23:57) and Dwayne Johnson (24:17) completed the course with a 43 - 45 placing.

Both squads will compete in Vanderbilt's Commodore Classic on Sept. 19 at Percy Warner Park. Start time is scheduled for 9 a.m.
