Guice Takes Long Jump in Day One of OVC Championship

Richmond, Ky. - The Tennessee State University women's track and field team completed day one (5/1) of the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship with a first place finish while qualifying for the finals in two events at the Tom Samuels Track.
Sophomore Martinique Guice spotlighted the day winning the long jump with a personal best, 20'07.75". Her mark qualifies next week's Regional Championship hosted by the University of Louisville. On the day, Guice qualified for the finals of the 100-meter dash with her season fastest time of 11.6 seconds.
Senior Rahab Kagaruki also qualified for tomorrow's finals. Kagaruki qualified for the 800-meter final with a time of 2:18.07.
In addition, other Tigerbelles scored on the day in the field events. In the shot put, sophomore Tanesha Campbell finished fifth overall and senior Kathy Onwu took eigth. Campbell threw a season best, 45'10.50", and Onwu posted 40'05.50".
Freshman Ashli Beverly leaped a season best, 18'03.75", for a fifth place finish in the long jump and senior Lanika Horn tallied sixth in the high jump clearing 5'02.25".
The Tigerbelles currently hold the fifth spot in the team standings with 22 points. Southeast Missouri leads with 67.50 followed by Eastern Illinois (49), Jacksonville State (27), and Murray State (26).
Tomorrow's finals will begin with the women's triple jump scheduled for a 9 a.m.start with the men's 4x100-meter relay set to begin the running events at 10 a.m. The meet will conclude with the final award ceremony.
