Women's Basketball Holds First Official Practice

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State University women's basketball team held its first official practice of the 2020-21 season on Wednesday morning.

The practice, which began at 6 a.m., was a welcomed site for first year head coach Ty Evans.

Q: Today was the first day of practice, officially. How do you feel?

Coach Ty: It’s like waking up on Christmas morning. I couldn’t sleep last night. The day before the first practice is literally like Christmas Eve for me. I woke up at like 3 o clock in the morning. It was like the first day of school. I can’t describe it any better than that, its just like Christmas morning.

Q: You focused on defense the first part of practice and then transitioned to offense. What was the thought process behind that?

Coach Ty: Well we like to have a good flow. I think flow is very important in practice. We’re going to be known by how hard we play on the defensive end. So we just wanted to set the tone early. And our defense leads to offense. If you look the flow of practice, that’s exactly what it was like. Our defense led to offense. We’ll start out with some skill work, some fundamental work, get after it on the defensive end and then we naturally flow back into offense.

Q: What was the team’s mindset going into the first practice?

Coach Ty: I think they were excited… overly excited. Judging by the number of turnovers probably too excited but they settled down over the course of practice and it went very well.

Q: As practice continues, what are you looking to focus on the most over the next few days?

Coach Ty: Consistency and effort. Right now we’re teaching them how hard they have to play on every single possession and how detailed they have to be on every single possession. So right now those are the two most important things.
