The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will officially open the 2019-20 campaign with a match-up against Wilberforce University Friday night in the Gentry Center. Tip-off for the season opener is set for 6 p.m.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State is coming off a 110-55 victory over Virginia-Lynchburg in its exhibition contest last Friday. The Lady Tigers controlled the pace the entire game and had all but one player score in the contest.
TSU returns eight letterwinners from last season while six newcomers joined the team.
Junior Taylor Roberts, the top returning scorer for TSU, averaged 12.5 ppg as a sophomore. She was named to the All-OVC Newcomer team after registering 14.6 ppg and 5.7 rpg her freshman season. Jaden Wrightsell was second on the 2018-19 team in rebounding with 6.3 rpg. Sophomore Terrysha Banner is the second leading scorer returning from last year. She made a team second-best 27 three-pointers and dished out 45 assists.
TSU will look to improve from a season ago in which the Lady Tigers went 5-25 overall and 5-13 in OVC play.
LAST TIME OUT
Tennessee State had a good showing in its exhibition game putting up 110 points in a dominant win over Virginia Lynchburg. Six Lady Tigers scored in double-digits while all except one player scored. Jazmine Young led TSU with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. Andreana Wrister added 15 while Jaden Wrightsell chipped in 14 points and nine boards. Taylor Roberts (11), Keniece Purvis (11) and Takya Bennett (11) also registered double-figures. TSU forced 44 turnovers and shot 81.8 percent from the free-throw line.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Wilberforce University (Ohio) is a member of the NAIA. The Bulldogs (1-2) are coming off a 106-33 win Miami University - Hamilton. Junior Nia McCormick leads WU in scoring with 21.0 ppg while senior LaTyrah Beasley averages 17.0 ppg.
Friday will mark the first regular season meeting between Tennessee State and Wilberforce.
