The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 16 for a midweek match up against Tennessee Tech University. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Eblen Center.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State went 1-1 last week after defeating Eastern Kentucky, 60-38, for the first win of the season and falling to Morehead State, 85-62, in the Gentry Center. The game versus the Eagles concluded a four-game homestand.
Sophomore Taylor Roberts leads TSU in scoring with 14.3 points per game while Tia Wooten is averaging 12.6 ppg. Terrysha Banner (6.8 ppg) is the team’s third leading scorer while Jaden Wrightsell pulls down a team-best 7.6 rpg.
As a team, TSU is averaging 58.6 ppg while shooting 31.1 percent from the field, including 20.4 percent from three-point range and 69.7 percent from the free-throw line. TSU is ranked first in the OVC in offensive rebounds (16.4) and fifth in free-throw percentage (.697).
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Tennessee Tech (12-3, 4-0 OVC) is coming off a 99-88 win over Eastern Illinois. The Golden Eagles are undefeated in league play and average 72.7 ppg. Jordan Brock (14.3 ppg), Kesha Brady (9.9 ppg) and Akia Harris (8.9 ppg) lead TTU in scoring.
TSU will face TTU for the 70th time in the long series history with the Golden Eagles holding a 56-13 lead. Tech claimed the first meeting of the season, 69-59, just 13 days ago in the Gentry Center. The Golden Eagles have won two straight over the Lady Tigers.
LAST TIME THEY MET
TSU nearly erased a 21-point deficit but the comeback fell short in a, 69-59, loss to Tennessee Tech in the OVC opener. TSU used a 13-2 run to cut Tech’s lead down to single digits but the Golden Eagles managed to keep the Lady Tigers at bay down the stretch. Taylor Roberts and Lauren Elliott each tallied 14 points while Tia Wooten finished with a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds.
