After playing four games in five days last week, the Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will return to action versus South Alabama Thursday night in the home opener. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State is still looking for its first win of the season. The Lady Tigers are coming off a 78-56 loss to Pittsburgh in the Challenge in Music City Basketball Tournament that was held at Municipal Auditorium Thanksgiving weekend. TSU also suffered losses to Arkansas and Wisconsin during three-day event.
Sophomore Taylor Roberts leads TSU in scoring with 17.0 points per game while Tia Wooten is averaging 12.2 ppg. Lauren Elliott rounds out the top three scorers with 7.4 ppg and Jaden Wrightsell pulls down a team-best 7.9 rebounds per outing.
As a team, TSU is averaging 59.0 ppg while shooting 32.5 percent from the field, including 23.4 percent from three-point range and 70.9 percent from the free-throw line.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
South Alabama (5-0) is coming off an 81-74 win over East Tennessee State at home on Monday. The Jaguars average 68.8 points per game while shooting 47.0 percent from the field and 34.3 percent from three-point range. South Alabama has four players averaging double-digits in scoring led by Shaforia Kines’ 14.5 ppg. USA also has wins over Spring Hill, Southern Miss, Central Arkansas and Southern.
Tennessee State will match up with South Alabama for the fourth time in the series history with the Jaguars leading, 2-1. USA claimed the last meeting, 59-43, in Mobile, Ala. on Nov. 12, 2012. TSU’s last win was a 74-69 victory in the Gentry Center on Dec. 3, 2011.
