GAMEDAY: The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team concludes its four-game home stand with a contest against Eastern Illinois Saturday, Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in Gentry Center.
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE: Tennessee State (3-15, 1-8 OVC) is looking to snap a five-game losing skid and pick up its second league win of the season. The Lady Tigers are coming off an, 88-76, loss to SIU Edwardsville on Thursday.
Redshirt junior Tia Wooten is leading the team with an OVC best 21.6 points per game while freshman Taylor Roberts averages 14.6 points per outing. Kaliya Griffin (8.1 ppg) is the third leading scorer for the Lady Tigers. Wooten and Roberts also lead the team in rebounding.
As a team, TSU is averaging 68.0 points per game while shooting 36.6 from the field and 28.8 percent from three-point range. The Lady Tigers are shooting 74.8 from the free-throw line.
In the OVC rankings, TSU is second in free-throw percentage and third in steals and offensive rebounding.
LAST TIME OUT: Tennessee State played hard but ultimately fell to SIU Edwardsville 88-76 Thursday night in Gentry Center. Tia Wooten led the team with 29 points and 11 rebounds for her 7th double-double of the season while Taylor Roberts came off the bench to score 15. Maxine Beard tallied 11 points and a career-high eight assists in the contest.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT: Eastern Illinois (2-18, 1-8) is currently on a four-game losing streak. The Panthers’ only OVC win was against TSU earlier this month. At the time, the win snapped a 12-game skid for EIU. As a team, EIU averages 58.2 points per game while shooting 35.5 percent from the field and 30.1 percent from three-point range. Grace Lennox leads the team with 15.4 points per game while Taylor Steele (9.4 ppg) and Jennifer Nehls (7.9 ppg) round out the top three scorers.
SERIES INFORMATION: Tennessee State and Eastern Illinois will meet for the 43rd time in the series history and the second time this season. The Panthers claimed the first meeting, 66-59, in overtime earlier this month. The win improved EIU to 29-13 in the series history and snapped a three-game losing skid to the Lady Tigers.
LAST TIME THEY MET: TSU used a 13-0 run in the third quarter to take control of the game but went cold in the fourth and only managed to score five points in the period. The scoring struggles allowed EIU to get back into the game and force overtime. In the extra period, TSU continued to struggle and was outscored 11-4 on the way to the loss. Tia Wooten and Taylor Roberts led TSU with 18 points each while Kaliya Griffin added 11.
