Women’s Basketball Adds Signees Clark and Garrett to Roster

NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State University head women’s basketball coach Jessica Kern announced the signing of two players to National Letters of Intent on Tuesday.

Katelyn Clark (6-3, Forward) and Mya Garrett (6-4, Forward) are Kern’s first signees at Tennessee State. The incoming freshmen will compete beginning the 2017-18 season.

Katelyn Clark, a 6-3 forward from Cahokia, Ill., played four years at Cahokia HS. She averaged 12.1 points, 9.6 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game as a senior while shooting 63.8 percent from the field. Clark, a South Seven All-Conference First Team selection, was named to the Collinsville Mid-winter All-Tournament Team. She led her team to a victory in the Illinois vs Missouri All-Star game and served as captain for two years. She was also a recipient of the Leadership Award and made the honor roll.

“A blue-collar presence around the rim, Katelyn brings to us a true post presence,” commented Kern. “At 6-3, her ability to finish around the rim, demand the ball and make her presence felt made her a perfect fit here at Tennessee State University. A mobile post who can distribute the ball efficiently, play the passing lane and can get out in transition makes her and immediate impact player."

Mya Garrett helped her team to a 16-5 record and a KLAA co-championship as a junior. The 6-4, Forward averaged 15.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg during that season. A member of the honor roll and native of Detroit, Mich., Garrett nearly averaged a double-double of 9.8 ppg and 11.0 rpg as a sophomore according to Max Preps. Prior to transferring, she served as team captain at Taylor Prep.

"We couldn't be more excited to have Mya as a part of the Big Blue family,” Kern continued. “At 6-3, her length, ability to stretch the court and uncanny ability to attack the rim makes her a continuous offensive threat. A mobile shot blocker with an eye for the ball, she will assist us in being a chameleon defensively. Hailing from Wayne Memorial High School where championships are the expectation, Mya comes to us with a winning mentality. We are extremely lucky to have her."

Clark and Garrett will increase the new player total to six as four signed during the early period.
