NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State women’s basketball team defeated Tennessee Temple, 109-57, in an exhibition contest on Monday night in the Gentry Center.

True freshman Samantha Palma led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 17 (7-of-9) off of the bench. Jayda Johnson (16) and Chelsea Hudson (13) also put up double-digits in points.

Hudson also paced TSU with seven rebounds, helping her team to a 49-36 advantage on the glass.

The game was tightly contested to start, and the Lady Tigers held just a one-point lead, 13-12, at the 11:51 mark of the first half.

From there, the Crusaders turned the ball over four times in three minutes, helping TSU widen its advantage to 25-14. The Lady Tigers also connected on 4-of-7 shots on the run, including a pair of buckets by Johnson.

Tennessee State led by as many as 24 in the opening period and went into halftime holding a 51-27 lead following a buzzer-beating layup by Palma.

The Lady Tigers forced a staggering 25 of its 43 turnovers during the first 20 minutes, leading to 32 TSU points.

The lead ballooned out to 49 after a 26-2 run by Tennessee State in the second stanza. The Lady Tigers’ defense played lights out during the stretch, holding TTU to a 1-for-10 line and forcing eight turnovers.

TSU inserted some of its younger players into the lineup late in the game, but the squad still did not let up and walked away with a, 109-57, victory.

Those younger Lady Tigers outscored the opposing bench 61-21 and TSU shot 55 percent from the field (42-of-77)

Following its tune-up, Tennessee State will begin the regular season on the road on Friday, Nov. 14 at NC State. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
