Women's hoops hits the road to face Jackson State
After a week of rest, the Tennessee State University women's basketball team will return to action on the road with a contest at Jackson State University. Game time is slated for a 3 p.m. start at Lee Williams Assembly Center.

Tennessee State (4-5) is coming off a 74-69 win over South Alabama on Saturday afternoon at the Gentry Center. The Lady Tigers have won two of their last three contests. TSU won two straight at home before falling to Southern Illinois and Fresno State. TSU bounced back to defeat Cal State Fullerton, 61-48, before its most recent loss to Memphis.

As a team, TSU is averaging 66.4 points per outing while shooting 38.0 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from beyond the arc. TSU is currently shooting only 59.1 percent from the free-throw line while committing an average of 18.8 turnovers per game.

Tennessee State grabbed the momentum midway through the first half and remained in control throughout the rest of the contest in a 74-69 win over South Alabama Saturday afternoon in the Gentry Center. Kim Haynes led TSU with 16 points while Destiney Gaston recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Kesi Hess added 11 points while Jasmin Shuler finished with 10 points. TSU improved to 3-1 at home.

Jackson State (0-4) has yet to pick up a win this season with its most recent loss coming to Idaho State, 47-36, at the Air Force Classic in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Saturday. JSU also has losses against Southeastern Louisiana, Tougaloo and Air Force.

As a team, JSU is averaging 57.6 points per game behind a .319 shooting percentage.  Dominique Brothern (7.5 ppg) and Tiffany Kellum (7.3 ppg) lead the team in scoring while Kellum pulls down 6.8 rebounds per outing. Kellum was also named to the Air Force All-Tournament Team.

Tennessee State and Jackson State will meet for the 11th time in the program's history as JSU holds an, 8-2 series lead. TSU claimed the last meeting by defeating JSU, 53-49 on Nov. 20, 2010. Jackson State's last win was a 70-35 victory over TSU in the 2003-04 season (12/20/03).

TSU defeated JSU 54-49 and improved to 2-2 on the season while Jackson State fell to 0-4.

Freshman Tayla Foster paced the Lady Tiger offense with 14 points while Meredith Stafford added 13. Alana Morris registered a team best seven rebounds and dished out four assists for TSU.

Takeya Felder led Jackson State with 19 points while Tiffany Kellum notched 13 points and seven boards.

TSU shot 35.6 percent from the field, including a dismal 17.6 shooting percentage  from three point range (3-of-17), but only committed 14 turnovers.

JSU finished the game with a 37.5 field goal shooting percentage, 36.4 percent from beyond the arc, and tallied 22 turnovers.

Jasmin Shuler is leading the Lady Tigers in scoring with 16.0 points per game while Destiney Gaston (10.3 ppg)  and Tayla Foster (8.3 ppg) round out the top three scorers for TSU. Gaston is leading the team with 5.2 rebounds per game.Rachel Allen is leading the team in assists while Gaston tops TSU in blocks.
