Women's hoops begins OVC action vs. Austin Peay



Tennessee State will officially kick-off the 2011-12 Ohio Valley Conference campaign when the Lady Tigers host Austin Peay on Thursday, Dec. 29 in the Gentry Center. Game time is at 5:30 p.m. in the Gentry Center.


Tennessee State (4-8) has dropped three straight contests with the most recent loss coming at the hand of Florida A&M. The Lady Tigers fell to the Rattlers, 90-75, in the Gentry Center in the final game before the break.

As a team, TSU is averaging 64.1 points per outing while shooting 36.6 percent from the field and 29.1 percent from beyond the arc. TSU is currently shooting only 59.1 percent from the free-throw line while committing an average of 19.9 turnovers per game.

TSU averages 41.1 rebounds, 13.1 assists and 20.3 turnovers per game.


Tennessee State dropped a 90-75 decision to Florida A&M in the final non-conference game of the season. Four players scored in double-digits but it wasn't enough as TSU lost its third straight. Jasmin Shuler led TSU with 17 points while Kim Haynes added 16. Tayla Foster finished the game with 15 points as Alana Morris chipped in 12. Donyeah Mayfield grabbed nine rebounds to lead TSU.


Austin Peay (3-10) opened the season 3-0 before dropping eight straight contests. APSU snapped the eight-game skid with a 58-56 overtime win at Belmont before falling to Florida A&M and Alabama A&M at home. The Lady Govs have dropped 10 of their last 11 games and hold a record of 1-4 at home and 2-5 on the road.

In APSU's most recent loss over Austin Peay, Jasmine Rayner led the team with 21 points and six rebounds while Whitney Hanley scored 18. Leslie Martinez rounded out the top scorers for APSU with 11.

Overall, the Lady Govs average 59.6 points per game behind a .376 field goal percentage. Whitney Hanley leads the team in scoring with 16.4 ppg while Jasmine Rayner (8.1 ppg), Leslie Martinez (7.9 ppg) and Nicole Olszwewski (7.7 ppg) and round out the top scorers for APSU. Martinez grabs a team-best 5.8 rebounds per outing.


Tennessee State and Austin Peay will meet for the 56th time in the long series history, with APSU holding a 32-23 lead over TSU. Last season, APSU swept the season series defeating TSU 60-45 in the Gentry Center before claiming a 74-66 decision in the Dunn Center. The Lady Tigers last win over the Lady Govs was a 68-57 victory in the Gentry Center (2/13/10).

Jasmin Shuler leads TSU in scoring with 14.8 ppg while Tayla Foster (9.0 ppg) , Destiney Gaston (8.2 ppg) and Kesi Hess (6.8 ppg) round out the top four scorers for the Lady Tigers. Gaston is pulling down a team-best 4.5 rebounds per game while Foster averages 4.3 caroms per outing. Rachel Allen leads the team in assists while Gaston also paces TSU with 16 blocks.


TSU will continue conference action with a road game at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, Dec. 31.
