Lady Tigers host Morehead St. on Faculty & Staff Night

The Tennessee State University women's basketball team returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 19 with an Ohio Valley Conference contest against Morehead State University. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. in the Gentry Center. TSU faculty and staff members get into the game for free with their I.D.
Tennessee State (6-12, 2-4 OVC) seemed to be on the way to its third conference win last Saturday after jumping out to a a 31-17 halftime lead over SIUE but the Lady Tigers were outscored, 43-19, in the second half and went on to drop its second straight contest. TSU has lost four of its last five contests and two straight at home. 

As a team, TSU is averaging 67.6 points per outing while shooting 36.6 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from beyond the arc. TSU is currently shooting only 64.6 percent from the free-throw line while committing an average of 19.1 turnovers per game.

TSU averages 43.0 rebounds, 12.6 assists and 8.6 steals per game.

Tennessee State saw a, 31-17, halftime lead slip away in a, 60-50, loss to SIU Edwardsville Saturday night in the Gentry Center. With the loss, TSU moved to 6-12 (2-4 OVC) overall and 4-4 at home. Rachel Allen was the only player to post double-figures and finished the game with 10 points. Simone Hopes recorded seven rebounds to lead TSU.

Morehead State (7-10, 4-1 OVC) has won four of its last five contests including two straight. In the Eagles' most recent win, they defeated Eastern Kentucky 68-58 at home. MSU opened OVC play with wins over SEMO and APSU before falling to Tennessee Tech on the road. The Eagles also have a win over Jacksonville State.

In MSU's win over EKU, Courtney Lumpkin led the team with 27 points while Ashar Harris grabbed 14 rebounds. Linda Dixon scored 22 points for MSU.

Overall, the Eagles average 61.5 points per game behind a .333 field goal percentage (.280 three-point range). Linda Dixon leads the team with 14.5 points per game while Courtney Lumpkin follows with 13.2 ppg. Ashar Harris averages a double-double with 11.6 points and 12.2 rebounds per outing.

Tennessee State and Morehead State will meet for the 47th time in the long series history with MSU leading, 30-16. The Eagles have won five out of the last six meetings, including five straight over the Lady Tigers. Last season, TSU fell to MSU, 62-58, in the Gentry Center before dropping a close, 84-82, decision on the road.

Jasmin Shuler leads TSU in scoring with 14.3 ppg while Tayla Foster (11.5 ppg) and Destiney Gaston (8.1 ppg) round out the top three scorers for the Lady Tigers. Foster is pulling down a team-best 5.6 rebounds per game while Gaston averages 4.7 caroms per outing. Rachel Allen leads the team in assists while Gaston also paces TSU with 24 blocks.

The Lady Tigers will continue OVC action with a home game vs. Morehead State on Thursday, Jan. 19. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
