The Tennessee State University women's basketball team will look to begin the year on a good note on Monday, Jan. 2 when the Lady Tigers host UT Martin in OVC action. Game time is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in the Gentry Center.

Tennessee State (5-9) continued to struggle on the road with a disappointing, 79-59, loss Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. The loss moved TSU to 0-6 on the road this season.
As a team, TSU is averaging 65.9 points per outing while shooting 36.3 percent from the field and 28.3 percent from beyond the arc. TSU is currently shooting only 62.2 percent from the free-throw line while committing an average of 20.3 turnovers per game.

Tennessee State fell to 0-6 on the road after suffering a 79-59 loss to Eastern Kentucky in McBrayer Arena. TSU led 31-30 at halftime but was outscored 49-28 in the second frame. Tayla Foster led the Lady Tigers with 21 points while Destiney Gaston added 13. TSU outrebounded EKU 47-35 and only committed 14 turnovers in the loss.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Tennessee Martin (7-6, 1-0 OVC) has won three of their last four contests including its most recent win over Tennessee Tech on Saturday. The Skyhawks defeated TTU, 83-61, in their OVC opener. UT martin has the top two scorers in the OVC.
In UTM's win over TTU, Heather Butler led the Skyhawks with 27 points while Jasmine Newsome posted 24. Perica Glenn grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
Overall, the Skyhawks average 71.5 points per game behind a .391 field goal percentage. Heather Butler, the OVC scoring leader, paces UTM with 20.9 ppg while Jasmine Newsome turns in 18.2 points per outing. Jaclissa Haislip (9.0 ppg) rounds out the top scorers for UTM. Haislip also leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per game.
TSU vs. UT Martin
Tennessee State and Tennessee Martin will meet for the 54th time in the long series history, with TSU holding a 28-25 lead over UTM. Last season, UTM swept the season series defeating TSU 83-67 in the Elam Center before escaping with a 70-64 decision in the Gentry Center. The Lady Tigers' last win over the Skyhawks was a 51-38 victory in the Gentry Center (1/9/10).

Jasmin Shuler leads TSU in scoring with 14.9 ppg while Tayla Foster (10.8 ppg) , Destiney Gaston (9.1 ppg) and Kesi Hess (6.3 ppg) round out the top four scorers for the Lady Tigers. Gaston is pulling down a team-best 5.0 rebounds per game while Foster averages 4.6 caroms per outing. Rachel Allen leads the team in assists while Gaston also paces TSU with 20 blocks.
The Lady Tigers will return to the road to face Jacksonville State on Saturday, Jan. 7 in Pete Mathews Coliseum. Game time is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
