Lady Tigers clinch first round home-court advantage of the OVC Basketball Championship Tournament

Nashville, Tenn. – In the Pink Zone (WBCA Breast Cancer Awareness Night) the Lady Tigers clinched home-court advantage in the first round of the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Champonship with a 70-54 win over Southeast Missouri at the Gentry Center Thursday night.

The home playoff match-up will be the first in Lady Tiger basketball history since joining the OVC. TSU extends their winning streak to five games sweeping the regular season series against SEMO.

Chelsea Cromartie led the Lady Tigers in scoring with career-high 13 points (6-of-6)hauling in eight rebounds. Jasmine Smith recorded her eighth doube-double of the season with 11 points (5-of-7) and 11 rebounds.  Jasmine Smith and Tiffany Jackson each posted 11 points apiece.

In the game, TSU shot 46 percent from the floor outscoring the Redhawks in the paint, 30-13.

The Lady Tigers (17-11, 13-4 OVC) jumped out to a commanding 21-10 lead and swelled their advantage for the largest lead in the half, 40-24,  with 3:14  on the clock. TSU shot 57 percent from the floor in the first half before going into the break with the lead, 42-30.

In the second half, SEMO stormed out on a 10-7 run to shrink the lead to single digit, 49-40, with 11:46 remaining. The Redhawks (14-13, 10-7 OVC) shot 46 percent from the field in the game with four players scoring in double figure.

Crysta Glenn tallied a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead SEMO. Sonya Daughtery and Tierra Johnson each scored 10 points.

Midway through the second, TSU opened up a 19-6 run for their largest lead of the game, 70-50, with 1:21 left. The Lady Tigers shot 4-of-5 from the line with under a minute of play to secure the double-figure win.

The Lady Tigers will close out the regular against Eastern Illinois on Saturday, February 28th for Courtside Dining and Senior Night. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
