NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State saw host Belmont use a late first half surge which continued into the start of the second half to hand the Lady Tigers an 84-65 loss Saturday afternoon at the Aquinas College Center in the season opener. The game had six lead changes in the opening half. TSU was victim to a 13-4 lead down the last five minutes of the first half. Belmont carried its largest lead of 10 points (39-29) into halftime. Belmont continued the pace in the second half, making an 11-2 run to start the period. TSU could pull no closer than 13 points the rest of the way. The Lady Tigers placed four players in double figures. Markiece Harris and Odessa Kelly each came off the bench to score 14 points. Guards Theresa Bowen scored 11 and Kisha Sewart added 10. Tristin Johnson led TSU with nine rebounds and converting all three field goal attempts and a free throw to finish with seven points. The Lady Tigers finished the game shooting 43 percent (26-61) from the field. TSU was hampered by 29 turnovers. Belmont shot 45 percent (44-76). The Bruins held a 47-36 rebounding edge. Brandi Miller led Belmont with 18 points. TSU will be in action over Thanksgiving weekend at the University of Memphis Tournament.
