NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State volleyball utility Julia Pierson was named a recipient of the 2018 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award for volleyball athletes.

The junior from Rowlett, Texas, earned First Team All-OVC honors and has been a member of the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll since enrolling at TSU. Pierson finished the season leading Big Blue with 364 kills and 13 double-doubles.

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine announced the sports awards for 36 different sports.

To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5; and be active on their campuses or in their communities. Approximately 1,000 male and female students from across the country were nominated.

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine - formerly Black Issues in Higher Education - dedicates an edition every year honoring student-athletes for their commitment to excellence. The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Program began in 1992 to honor undergraduate students of color who reflect the values of Arthur Ashe, Jr.
