NASHVILLE --- Head Coach Donika Sutton and the Tennessee State volleyball team kicked off fall camp a week ago today, and in her second year at the helm of the Tigers, Sutton is focused on building a culture of hard work, discipline and heart – on and off the court.
Big Blue finished last season 7-23 overall, 3-13 in the conference. The program welcomes back three returning starters, and has added 10 newcomers to the roster.
In week one, the team has focused on every aspect of the game, from ball control to blocking/transition, and with depth at the outside position provided by Destiny Washington, Jojo Kruize and Khalia Jordan, and at libero/defensive specialist with Kylie Hayes, Gina Rivera Ortiz and Micahlea Njie, the Tigers are looking for success on both sides of the ball.
The team heads to the Ocean Bank Convocation Center on the campus of Florida International University in Miami, Florida for the FIU Kickoff Aug. 24. The Tigers will face Stetson.

“Camp has been going really well. We started off strong and fast and we continued on. I think the girls have come in conditioned and ready to go. They’re in great shape. We’ve been able to see a lot of great things from them because it seems like they’re focused and have the right mindset. A lot of drills don’t go the way we want them to go, but it’s allowing us to get a chance to get to know a lot of the new players and see the team come together. It’s been a really good camp. We had a really good team bonding weekend. It has helped us grow on and off the court. We’re excited about the upcoming week. We’re excited about the inner-squad scrimmage, as well as a team coming in to scrimmage. I’m excited to see the outcome of that. And then we have our alumni match to wrap up camp and see how we end.”
