Tigers Win Fourth Straight by Defeating Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. --- The Tigers faced off with the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State in a conference match that saw Tennessee State win by a 3-1 score.

Four Tigers recorded double-digit kills in the match including Payten Clark (11), Chloe Watson (13), Arijana Anderson (12) and Taylor Patterson who led the way with 15 kills. Defensively Cherlie Adorno-DeJesus registered 23 digs. Samantha Beltran and Puamana Danielson shared the duties at setter and recorded double-digit assists with 39 and 16 respectively. Beltran also had 14 digs. Alexis Johnson and Julia Pierson both recorded nine kills in the match. The match scores were (25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 25-21).

Two kills by Anderson and a service ace from Patterson gave TSU an early 3-1 advantage in set one. Trailing 7-4 a kill by Clark put the Tigers down by two. Johnson registered back to back kills bringing the score within one. Down 12-8 the Tigers took a timeout to regroup.  A JSU kill put the TSU behind 15-12. Another Patterson kill saw the Tigers down 19-17. Three consecutive kills from Watson brought TSU within one point. After a blocking miscue by Tennessee State made the score 23-21 in favor of JSU the Tigers took a timeout. Clark would register a block and then a kill to tie the score at 23 before Jacksonville State burned its first timeout of the set. Patterson recorded her fifth kill to give Tennessee State a come from behind win in set one.

A JSU hitting error started stanza number two with TSU leading 1-0. Powerful kills from Watson and Anderson brought the score to 4-3 with Jacksonville State having a slight edge. A Watson ace gave TSU a 7-6 lead. A Beltran ace tied the score at 10 all; before the Tigers went on a four point run to make the score 14-10 TSU. JSU burned a timeout to stop the TSU run. Another kill from Clark and Patterson gave Tennessee State a 20-16 lead forcing the Gamecocks to take another timeout. Kill number 10 for Patterson ended the second frame giving TSU another win.

The third set started with the Tigers trailing 7-2 and taking a quick timeout. A kill from Clark would stop the Gamecock run. JSU extended its lead to 14-6 before a Watson kill made the score 14-7. A run from Tennessee State made the score 14-10 and made Jacksonville State take a timeout. JSU lead 18-12 before Anderson registered her eighth kill of the day. A Tiger block helped Tennessee State close the gap to 21-18 before Jacksonville State burned its last timeout of the set. A long rally resulted in a kill by Watson making the score 22-20; before a JSU kill pushed the score to 23-20. An error by TSU gave JSU a win in set three.

Three straight points for TSU started the fourth frame. Leading 7-2 the Tigers forced the Gamecocks to take an early timeout. The Tigers extended its lead on another kill by Watson. With a 13-9 lead Tennessee State took a timeout. Pierson gave TSU a 16-10 lead on consecutive kills. JSU would then record five straight points and bring the score within one 16-15. A kill from Johnson followed by a service ace from Watson gave TSU a 20-17 lead and forcing JSU to use its last timeout. A block by TSU sealed the game and the match.
