Tigers Fall in Five Set Heartbreaker

MARTIN, TENN. --- The Tigers dropped a five set heartbreaker to the Skyhawks of UT Martin 3-2.

The Tigers had an impressive offensive performance with three players in double digit kills. Julia Pierson lead the team with 12 total kills followed by 11 from Chloe Watson and Payten Clark. Katora Roberts registered 8 followed by Taylor Patterson with seven. Cherlie Adorno-DeJesus had 14 digs while Watson added 12 and Patterson contributed 10.

Tennessee State started set one off with a 3-0 lead before UT Martin tied the score at five all. The Tigers would then trail 12-7 early in the frame. A service error by Martin would slow down a Skyhawk run. TSU would use a timeout to regroup trailing 17-12. Martin built a five point lead through the set that would push them to a 25-18 win in frame number one.

The second stanza would start with the Tigers up 5-1.  Tennessee State would then stretch the lead to 11-5. The Skyhawks would burn a timeout trying to slow the Tigers down. TSU would increase the lead to 16-8 making UTM take their second timeout. The Tigers would lead 22-18 late in set two. A timeout by Tennessee State would be used to calm down UT Martin’s momentum. The Skyhawks would trail 24-21 forcing the Tigers to take another timeout. A kill by Taylor Patterson would finish set two with a Tiger win 25-20.

Frame three would start with the Tigers down 7-4. A kill by Anderson would tie the score at eight and force a timeout from UTM. Neither team would be able to establish a lead with teams exchanging point for point. Two straight points for TSU would make UT Martin call a timeout with the Tigers leading 16-14. Martin would lead 20-19 and TSU would take its first timeout of the frame. Tennessee State would take another timeout trailing 23-20. Martin would go on to win the set 25-20.

Tennessee State started set four off with a 5-5 tie. Down 10-8 Cherlie Adorno-DeJesus would pull the Tigers within one on a service ace. A hitting error would even the score at 11. UT Martin would use a timeout to slow TSU down. Two straight hitting errors by the Skyhawks would tie the score at 17 and force another UTM timeout. A service ace by Watson gave TSU a 20-19 lead. There would be an intense finish to set four with a kill by Pierson to give Tennessee State a 25-22 win and push the match to a fifth set.

The final frame would start with a 3 all tie. The Skyhawks would commit a service error that would tie the score again at five apiece. Neither team would give any ground with the score being tied at every point. Tied at 14 UTM would record a service ace followed by a kill that would give Martin a set 5 win and match win.
