Tigers Fall at Home to Eastern Kentucky

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State University volleyball team dropped an Ohio Valley Conference match to Eastern Kentucky University Saturday at Kean Hall.

The Tigers (6-10, 1-1 OVC) lost 3-1 to EKU (12-6, 2-0 OVC) in their second conference match of the season. Senior Taylor Swayzer led all scorers with a season-high 20 kills while senior Naomi Wells had another double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs.

TSU won a hard fought first set after both teams went back-and-forth as far as who had the lead. EKU was able to rally and win the next three sets and take the match.

Freshman Samantha Beltran turned in another solid game with 46 assists and was one dig shy of a double-double.

Defensively, the story was TSU’s blocking. As a team, they had nine total blocks, with 14 block assists and two solo blocks. Swayzer had a solo block and three block assists while junior Haley Hampton had a solo block and assisted five others. Wells also had three block assists while sophomore Neisha Crockett had a pair.

Two Tigers joined Wells in double-digit digs as senior Ileanushka Maldonado led the team with 14 and sophomore Taylor Patterson had 10.

TSU will return to action on Tuesday when they host crosstown, conference foe Belmont at Kean Hall. Match time is slated for 6:00 p.m.
