Tigers Fall to Lady Govs Friday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State University volleyball team fell in straight sets to Ohio Valley Conference rival Austin Peay in Kean Hall on Friday night.

The Tigers (8-14, 2-5 OVC) dropped three straight sets to the Governors (11-12, 5-2 OVC) on Dig Pink night. TSU had two players with double-digit digs as senior Ileanushka Maldonado tallied 18 to lead all defenders and senior Naomi Wells joined her with 10.

“This is part of the growing pains of conference play,” head coach Kathy Roulhac said. “We will take this, learn from it, and get better.”

Junior Haley Hampton led the team offensively with seven kills and she began each set with a put down. Freshman Samantha Beltran had 21 assists and seven digs.

“Illea has been huge for us lately. She’s made the transition from left back to middle back very well. She’s a leader for us both defensively and overall so it’s huge that she can continue to perform like she has.”

The Tigers will take on Murray State tomorrow at noon at Kean Hall.
