Volleyball hosts SIUE in home opener


Nashville, Tenn.  --- The Tennessee State University volleyball team will play its first official home games of the season this Friday and Saturday when the Tigers host SIU Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois.

TSU (5-4, 1-1 OVC) will face the Cougars of SIU Edwardsville at 7 p.m. on Friday before matching up with Eastern Illinois Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Both matches will be played in Kean Hall.

Tennessee State fell to Western Kentucky (20-25, 27-29, 20-25)and Morehead State (22-25, 14-25, 12-25) before defeating Eastern Kentucky (20-25,20-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-12) last week. Senior Shaquita Williams tallied 46 kills with a .460 hitting percentage over the three matches. She registered a season-high 24 kills with a .526 attack percentage in the win over Eastern Kentucky. Sophomore Erika Moss dished out 101 assists, including 53 in the match with EKU.

SIUE (1-1 OVC; 6-7 overall)

SIUE fell to Murray State (27-25, 22-25, 21-25, 21-25) before defeating Southeast Missouri (25-22, 25-19, 25-15) for it first ever OVC win. Junior Brianne Graunke recorded 12 kills in each match and hit .367, including posting a .429 in the win over Southeast Missouri. Freshman Chelsea Colclasure led the team with 5.14 digs per set and tallied 20 or more kills for the fifth time this season versus the Redhawks. SIU leads the OVC with 15.14 kills per set and 14.00 assists per set.

EASTERN ILLINOIS (0-2 OVC; 2-10 overall)

 Eastern Illinois fell to Southeast Missouri (22-25, 22-25, 22-25) and Murray State (13-25, 22-25, 25-17, 18-25) to open up Conference play last week. Junior Emily Franklin recorded double-digit kills in both matches, including leading all players with 14 kills against Murray State. Senior setter Chrissie Albers tallied her 14th career double-double with 40 assists and 11 digs versus the Racers. Junior Alison Berens recorded six of EIU's 14 blocks against Murray State.
