Shaquita Williams named to Preseason All-OVC team
Wednesday, July 27, 2011

Nashville --- Senior Shaquita Williams was selected to the 2011 preseason All-OVC volleyball team in a vote by the league head coaches and sports information directors.

Williams, a native of Huntsville, Ala., was the offensive leader for TSU last season.  She averaged 2.74 kills per set while hitting a team second-best .226 attack percentage.  She also led the team and ranked fifth in the OVC in service aces.

The 6-0 middle blocker/outside hitter was named OVC Offensive Player of the Week in November and was later selected to the 2010 OVC volleyball team for her efforts. She recorded five or more blocks in seven matches last season and finished top ten in the OVC with 365 total points. She scored 20-plus points in five matches with a season-high 32 against Tennessee Tech (10/29/10).

Tennessee State was predicted to finish the 2011 conference race in eighth place. Morehead State was selected to win the title while Austin Peay and Jacksonville State rounded out the top three.

Last season, TSU finished the 2010 season with an overall record of 9-18 and a 7-11 conference mark (t-7th place.) The Tigers averaged 11.86 kills, 1.75 blocks and 14.86 digs per set. TSU finished the season with a .173 attack percentage.

After posting three straight 20-plus win seasons in 2006 and 2007, the Tigers have struggled the past few seasons. Tennessee State is looking to reclaim its championship status and return to the NCAA tournament.

The Tigers will officially kick-off the season on August 26 at the Big Orange Bash hosted by Clemson. TSU will play its first home match of the season on Friday, September 23 against SIU Edwardsville. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Kean Hall.
