MARTIN, Tenn. --- The Tennessee State University volleyball team (3-16, 0-5 OVC) was unable to overcome the strong offensive effort of interstate rival Tennessee-Martin on Thursday night, falling to the Skyhawks, 3-0. After dropping game one, 30-17, the Lady Tigers took an early 6-4 lead before Tennessee-Martin knotted the game at eight. The Skyhawks surged and gained the lead, never looking back on their way to taking the game, 30-23. Tennessee State opened the third game with a slim 2-1 lead before Tennessee-Martin rebounded and jumped to a 7-4 lead. The Lady Tigers moved to within three, 16-13, before the Skyhawks pulled away again. Back-to-back errors by Tennessee-Martin narrowed the score, 25-20, and a late surge gave the Skyhawks the 30-22 win. Junior Catherine Armwood (Durham, N.C.) led the Lady Tigers with nine kills while classmate Jennifer Washington (East Pointe, Ga.) led the defensive effort nine digs. Freshman Kelly Davis (Farrell, Pa.) hit a game-high .667 with six kills and 24 assists. Tennessee State returns to action on Tuesday, October 12 as it hosts Southeast Missouri State in Kean Hall. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
