MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- The Tennessee State volleyball team (0-2, 0-0 OVC) opened its 2004 campaign Friday on the road at an invitational hosted by the University of Memphis. The Lady Tigers fell in both of its matches, 3-0, to Illinois-Chicago (1-1) and Memphis (1-0), respectively.
Tennessee State out hit UIC, .172 to .155, but was cut down by costly mistakes in the tournament's opening contest. The Lady Tigers dropped the first two games with identical 30-24 scores and attempted to rally to take the third game but fell short, 30-26.
Junior Thereza Wright (El Paso, Texas) hit a match-leading .571 while freshman while Kelly Davis (Farrell, Pa.) hit .286 in her collegiate debut. Rookie Allyson Buckner (Humble, Texas) notched a match-leading 11 kills.
In their second match of the day against host-Memphis, the Lady Tigers were halted by a strong hitting Memphis squad who held TSU to -.021. UM, who hit .307 on the day, stopped Tennessee State, 30-14, 30-16, 30-15. Freshman Ashley Douglas (DeSoto, Texas) led the Lady Tigers, hitting .333.
Tennessee State returns to action tomorrow at the University of Memphis Tournament playing Alabama A&M at 9 a.m., followed by Delaware State at 4:30 p.m.
