2017 Tigers: Tennessee State dropped all five games at the Tiger Classic. TSU lost three games to Iowa State and two to Alabama A&M. TSU was led by freshmen Patton Akers and Selena Crafton at the plate. Akers batted .545 with a double and three RBI, while Crafton batted with two doubles, three RBI and a stolen base. Senior Courtney Gearlds moved into a tie for third in runs scored and fifth in hits on the TSU career lists. On the season, Danica Gleason leads the Tigers hitting .500 (13-for-26) with three doubles, eight runs scored and seven RBI. Gearlds leads the team with nine stolen bases with Crafton following with six. In the circle, Tori Hart leads TSU at 2-2 and has posted a 4/48 ERA. Lauren Woodard has the top ERA on staff at 3.32 and is tied for first in the nation in Walks per 7 Innings (0.00). Only two others pitchers in NCAA DI have tossed more innings without issuing a walk.

The Hornets return a majority of its offense from last year’s SWAC Championship squad, including the league’s preseason Player of the Year, Kendall Core who batted.348 with 57 hits. Core finished with 43 RBI, 13 doubles, 100 total bases and 10 home runs. Laura Aguilar (.385, 70 hits, 33 runs, 10 doubles), Alexia Boggess (.333, 4 HR, 11 2B, 31 RBI) and Charlene Castro (.390, .617 SLG, 8 HR, 43 RBI) also return for ASU. The Hornets will look to replace 2016 Pitcher of the Year Maddie Phelps and second-team selection Melissa Christmann, who have both graduated, in the circle. This season, the Hornets have been led by Perry Hindi and Core who are both batting over .400. Hindi collected nine hits, four for extra bases, including two dingers, and scored eight runs, while driving in six. Core scored four times, drove in nine and had two long balls. Vanessa Bradford has appeared in seven of the Hornets eight games. The freshman hurler is 2-3 with a 5.96 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 22.1 innings of work. Fellow freshman Justine Jean was worked in five games and has tossed 18.0 innings.

Evansville (1-4)
2016 Record: 24-26

Despite starting the season 1-4, the Purple Aces will look to rely on their pitching staff to keep them in ballgames. The unit has surrendered five earned runs through the first five games and has a combined 1.02 ERA. Morgan Florey has worked 20.1 innings and has yet to yield an earned run. The sophomore pitcher is 1-2 with 25 strikeouts and has held opponents to a .079 batting average. Emily Lockhart is currently 0-2 with four punch outs in seven innings and has posted a 3.00 ERA. Offensively, Evansville has been held to eight runs and a .212 batting average. Brittany Hay leads the squad at a .313 clip with a double and two stolen bases. Florey and Michal Luckett have provided support going 4-for-13, for a .308 average.
