Tigers Defeat Alabama A&M In Home Opener, 6-4
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tigers jumped out early on a cold Tuesday afternoon to claim a victory on the home opener against Alabama A&M. Tennessee State scored in each of the first four innings on the way to a 6-4 non-conference win. TSU has won three straight games to improve to 3-4 on the season, while AAMU fell to 7-3.
Game two was cancelled due to temperatures in the low 30’s. The game may be rescheduled later in the season.
Eight Tigers registered hits on the day with Lindsey Burgess leading the way as she belted her second home run of the season. In the circle, Taylor Green worked the first five innings to register the win, improving to 3-0. Freshman Amber Galyon earned her first career save recording the final four outs.
Courtney Gearlds wasted no time getting TSU on the board first. In the bottom of the first inning, the sophomore led-off with a single, only to swipe second a pitch later. After moving to third on a fly out by Kailey Richard, Gearlds crossed home plate on a wild pitch from Bulldogs starter Anisa Britt (3-3).
The Tigers added to the lead an inning later when Burgess hammered a ball over the centerfield fence on the first pitch she saw. The blast was her second in consecutive at bats, as she hit a solo home run in her final at bat ten days ago against Britt in Huntsville.
With a 2-0 lead, TSU continued to attack AAMU scoring two more runs in the bottom of the third off a single by Richard and back-to-back two-out doubles from Lauren Dreitlein and Kate Morris. The Bulldogs scratched a run in the fourth, only to see the Tigers answer back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from Cariona Hassell and an RBI double from Tayler Shimizu.
The Bulldogs started cutting into the Tigers lead with two runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth to make the score 6-4. Green, Savannah Womack and Galyon teamed up to strand 12 Bulldog runners on the day and secure the win.
The Tigers will travel to Columbia, S.C. to take part in the Carolina Classic from Feb. 27- Mar. 1. TSU will play four games in three days. All games can be heard on
