Tigers Drop Fourth Straight, Swept by Eagles in Doubleheader
Saturday, April 11, 2009

Morehead, Ky. --- On 'Strike Out Cancer' day the Tennessee State University softball team dropped both games of Saturday’s doubleheader to Morehead State at University Field.

The game scores were 5-0 and 6-3.

Tennessee State (16-21, 7-10 OVC) dropped its fourth straight while Morehead (24-14, 8-7 OVC) won its fifth consecutive game and swept the season series.

On the day, Tennessee State hit .204 and tallied 10 hits. Bridget Metzger recorded a hitting percentage of .600 in the doubleheader and had a .714 on base percentage.

The Tigers fell behind early in game one as the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. MSU capitalized on three walks, two hits and a passed ball in the inning.

The MSU pitching held the TSU offense in check as the Tigers were held scoreless and only tallied three hits in the game.

While TSU’s offensive struggles continued, MSU added another run in the fourth inning to increase its advantage to the final score, 5-0.

Jennifer Culberson led TSU at the plate going 2-for-3 in the game. In the meantime, Caitlin Eaton (10-9) was tagged with the loss.

In the second game, TSU saw a 3-1 lead slip away as MSU came back to claim the contest 6-3.

TSU got on the board early in game two, capturing a 1-0 lead in the first inning. After walking, Bridget Metzger advanced to second on Caitlin Eaton’s single to left field. Then, Metzger crossed the plate on an error by the left fielder.

The Eagles answered right back in their half of the frame when a lead off walk and a single to center field led to MSU tying the game 1-1.

TSU reclaimed the lead in the top of the third when back-to-back singles from Bridget Metzger and Brittany Webb, coupled with an MSU fielding error put runners in scoring position for the Tigers.

Later, a throwing error by MSU’s shortstop led to Metzger scoring and giving TSU a 2-1 lead.

The Tigers increased the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth when Tamara Perkins christened the inning with a triple to right field and later scored when Bridget Metzger drove her in with a single.

In the bottom half of the frame, MSU responded yet again, using a two-run single up the middle to knot the contest at 3-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, a lead off triple to right field sparked what would eventually be a three-hit, three-run rally for the Eagles to give MSU a 6-3 lead.

TSU threatened in the top of the sixth, with a runner in scoring position and only one out.

With one batter retired, Bridget Metzger doubled and then advanced to third on a fielding error by the right fielder.  Metzger, however, would be left stranded on third base.

In the 7th, the TSU batters went down in order as MSU held on for the 6-3 win.

Megan Hedrick (3-9) was charged with the loss while Bridget Metzger went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs, a double, a walk and an RBI for the Tigers. Tamara Perkins recorded her third triple of the season.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, when they face the Bisons of Lipscomb University in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one of the doubleheader is slated to begin at 2 p.m. at Draper Diamond.
