Tigers Fall Short Against Panthers

Charleston, Ill. --- The Tennessee State University softball team dropped its OVC opener to Eastern Illinois 4-3 Friday evening.


The Tigers (8-9, 0-1 OVC) held a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh but the Panthers (11-7, 1-0 OVC) rallied from behind to score two runs in the frame and capture the win.


Caitlin Eaton was tagged with the loss (5-4). Eaton, however, also led TSU with two hits while Royesha Goodman and Jalisa Bradley each recorded an RBI.


Eastern Illinois captured the first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning and held a 1-0 advantage until the top of the fourth.


In the top of the fourth, pinch runner Kristin Powell advanced to second after Caitlin Eaton singled up the middle. Powell later scored on a miscue by the Panthers to even the score 1-1.


EIU answered in the bottom of the frame with another run to recapture the advantage.


With TSU trailing 2-1, Bridget Metzger singled down the left field line to christen the sixth inning. Brittany Webb followed with a hit to center field before Caitlin Eaton tacked on the Tigers’ third consecutive hit.


On Eaton’s shot to right field, Metzger advanced to third and then scored on an error by the right fielder.


Eaton then advanced to second while Webb moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Tamara Perkins. With two outs, Jalisa Bradley singled to left field to plate Webb and give TSU a 3-2 lead. Eaton was tagged out at home plate to end the inning.


EIU used a lead off single followed by a double to knot the score 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh. With two batters retired and a runner on third, a Panther hit pushed EIU to the slight 4-3 victory.


TSU and EIU will conclude the series tomorrow when the teams face-off in a double-header. The first game will  begin at 12 p.m.
