Tigers Split Two Games in Day One of UCF Invitational

Softball opens UCF Invitational, 1-1

Orlando, Fla. – The Tigers split their first two games of the University of Central Florida Invitational defeating Westen Michigan, 8-2, before dropping to host UCF, 9-7 on Friday, February 27th. TSU moves to 7-4 overall winning one of their last four games.

TSU hit .315 on the day with 16 RBI's. Caitlin Eaton and Bridget Metzger led the offense combining for eight RBI's.

Eaton batted 5-of-7 for a .714 average adding a double and home run. On the mound, she threw nine strikeouts for both games  in seven innings pitched. Metzger hit a home run posting a .571 average. 

Tennessee State - 8, Western Michigan - 2

Eaton (4-1) threw eight strikeouts and gave up two earned runs in six innings pitched. At the plate, Eaton hit 2-of-3 with 2 RBI's. Metzger and Royesha Goodman each batted 2-of-3 combining for three RBI's.

Jalisa Bradley, Christy Hill, Tamara Perkins, and Brittany Webb each added a RBI in the win.

With a 1-1 score in the bottom of the third inning, the Tigers capitalized on a Goodman two-RBI double to left center, a Bradley single up the middle and an unearned run from a walk with bases loaded to take the lead, 5-1.

The Tigers batted .370 in the game hitting 10 of 27 at bats with eight RBI's.

The Broncos (3-3) scored another run on a homer in the fifth inning, but could not manufacture anymore runs. In the sixth inning, TSU extended the lead when Perkins' single scored in a run and Eaton's rightside single brought in two more to cap the score, 8-2.

Tennessee State - 7, Central Florida - 9

Starting pitcher Megan Hedrick (1-3) gave up seven earned runs on seven hits in only 2.2 innings pitched. Susie Burke jumped in midway through the top of the third throwing two strike outs giving up one earned run on four hits before sitting down in the sixth.

TSU hit 7-of-27 for .259 with seven RBI's. Offensively, Eaton finished hitting 3-of-4 with a team high three RBI's. Metzger (2-of-4) added two RBI's with Bradley and Goodman adding one RBI apiece.

TSU trailed 8-0 in the top fourth before scoring three runs courtesy of doubles to center from Eaton and Goodman with a triple  from Bradley up the middle to narrow the UCF lead, 8-3.

The Knights (12-8) tacked on another run at the bottom of the inning and TSU anwered back posting three more runs at the top of the fifth inning. Metzger hit a home run with one on and Eaton followed with a one shot homer to bring the Tigers back in the game, still trailing, 9-6.

With a chance to tie or take the lead in the top of the seventh, Eaton hit a double to score in a run, however a ground-out double and ground out single cut the Tigers' chances.
