BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Tennessee State held leads, but in each game host Samford rallied for wins on the way to taking a doubleheader sweep over the Tigers, 4-1 and 7-3, in the Ohio Valley Conference openers for both teams Saturday. TSU had broken a scoreless tie in the opener as shortstop Nira Robbins homered over the left center field fence. Samford would tie the game in the seventh inning. The winning blow came in the eighth inning on a three-run home run from Shelly Smith. Kristina Blair was again a tough-luck loser for TSU, going the distance. In the nightcap, Leena Worrell homered twice for TSU, but Samford used the strength of a four-run fourth to post the win. Worrell drove in all three TSU runs, hitting a two-run shot to score Robbins who had singled in the third to give TSU a 2-1 lead. Worrell had her third homer of the year in the seventh. TSU will go for a win in the series when the teams play a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
