NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State softball team (14-34, 3-14 OVC) dropped the final game of its series with visiting Tennessee-Martin (28-18, 11-6 OVC) on Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field. The final score of the game was 4-3 in favor of the Skyhawks. Tennessee-Martin was the first to score at the top of the first inning behind a double by Nicole Davis. The Skyhawks picked up their second run of the day in the third inning when a double to left center by Kristin Runyan was followed by a single to right field by Davis. The Tigers finally answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior Catriona Smith (Marion, N.C.) reached on a throwing error by the thirdbaseman and advanced to second on a passed ball. Classmate Shannon Hicks (Smyrna, Tenn.) singled to left, putting Smith in scoring position. Rookie Hollie Sanders (Columbia, Tenn.) knocked a hard single to second, sending both Smith and Hicks home with unearned runs. Not to be outdone, Tennessee-Martin collected two more runs in the top of the six inning. Sanders hit her ninth double of the season in the bottom of the inning to score Smith but it was too little too late as the Tigers fell, 4-3. Sanders finished the day with her second 2 for 3 effort in as many days. Junior Tarah Evanisko (San Jose, Calif.) recorded two strikeouts after throwing the entire seven innings. For the Skyhawks, Runyan and Davis, who also pitched and recorded four strikeouts on the day, went 2 for 3. Tennessee State returns to action on Tuesday, April 27 as it hosts Samford for a doubleheader at Tiger Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
