CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. --- The Tennessee State softball team opened up a three-game set at Southeast Missouri State on Saturday. The Tigers dropped the first contest, 9-1 and the nightcap, 8-0. Game one started out fairly even between the two teams. Though Tennessee State had recorded more hits than the Otahkians by the third inning, the score remainded knotted at one after the Tigers got on the scoreboard in the third inning. Freshman Nitisha McWherter (Paris, Tenn.) got things started for TSU with a single to center field. She was followed by senior Catriona Smith (Marion, N.C.), who sent a single into right field, scoring McWherter. In the bottom of the fourth, Southeast Missouri State unleashed four hits in a row and pushed ahead, 5-1. In the next inning, the Otahkians added three more runs and one more in the sixth end the game, 9-1. The Otahkians never allowed Tennessee State to string together hits to score in the nightcap. After picking up three runs through the first four innings, Southeast Missouri State rallied and scored five runs off six hits to shutout the Tigers, 8-0. Tennessee State returns to action on Sunday as it wraps up its three-game series with the Otahkians. The first pitch of the single game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
