MOREHEAD, Ky. --- The Tennessee State softball team (10-20, 0-2 OVC) fell short in its Ohio Valley Conference opener against Morehead State (10-14, 3-2 OVC) on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers fell 7-4 in the opener and dropped the nightcap 5-1. Morehead State got on the board first in the third inning of the first game after three straight hits led to two Eagle runs. MSU added a score in the fourth, before TSU made a switch in the circle from junior Tarah Evanisko (Morgan Hill, Calif.) to sophomore Justine Jontz (). The Tigers responded with a two-run, three-hit fifth when rookie Casey Probus (Rahway, N.J.) started a rally with her second double of the season. Junior Caryn Barber (Santa Rosa, Calif.) followed with another double sending Probus over the plate after a sacrifice hit by junior Sabrina Smiley (Eagle River, Alaska) moved her to third. A single by senior Catriona Smith (Marion, N.C.) followed by a Lady Eagle fielding error sent Barber home, narrowing the score to 3-2. In the top of the sixth, freshman Hollie Sanders (Columbia, Tenn.) smashed her fourth homerun of the season into left center to knot the score at three. However, Morehead State collected four runs in the bottom of the inning to bring the total to seven. Despite recording three hits, Tennessee State was only able to convert one into a run and fell in game one, 7-4. Game two saw both team remain scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Lady Eagles recorded two runs and followed in the next inning with three more. A single by sophomore Misty Adfield (Twin Falls, Idaho) scored senior Shannon Hicks (Smyrna, Tenn.) but it was too little to late as Morehead State held on to win, 5-1. The Tigers wrap up their opening OVC weekend on Sunday afternoon with a single game at Morehead State. The first pitch is scheduled for Noon.
