46 Student-Athletes Don Cap and Gown

NASHVILLE - This past Saturday, 46 Tennessee State University student athletes walked across the stage during the University’s 2014 Spring commencement ceremony in Hale Stadium.

Fourteen of the students completed their work during the end of the Fall semester.

“I am so proud of the students’ accomplishments on and off the field or court, but nothing can compare to the achievement of earning a college degree,” commented Director of Academic Services, Dr. Johnnie Smith.  “I salute each one of them on their special day and major milestone, and wish them the best in their future endeavors.”

The graduating seniors have experienced great success, academically and athletically for the Tigers. In this season alone, TSU won the OVC Indoor Track and Field Championship while also being named the Black National Football Champions. The Tigers also boasted a number of All-Americans and All-OVC selections.

On top of those accomplishments, these student-athletes have also done many of hours of community service in the Nashville area.

After their successful years with the TSU athletic programs these graduating seniors are moving on to many endeavors, including professional careers, internships and graduate school.

Four years ago, Cierra Joshua made her way down to Nashville from Detroit, Mich., to begin her tenure at Tennessee State. As a four-year member of the TSU Track and Field team, she understood the importance of balancing athletics and academics. For Joshua, graduation is the end of a long-road of hard work and the beginning of a new journey.

“It’s been great being a track and field athlete at TSU,” said Joshua. “It has taught me time management and the importance of building relationships as well as networking for the future. After graduation I plan on joining the Nashville Metropolitan Police Department.”

Joshua continued by saying, “I’m a first generation college student so reaching that milestone has definitely given my family members something to look up to.”
