NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State University has received the third place award for one of the Ohio Valley Conference's most prestigious honors, the OVC Academic Achievement Banner, for the 2003-04 year. In addition, TSU placed 41 athletes on the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
The OVC Academic Achievement Banner is given annually to the school whose student-athletes have the highest combined grade point average as compared to the average for the entire full-time undergraduate student body. TSU, which won the award in 2000-01, had another strong showing to finish behind Jacksonville State and Austin Peay this year.
As part of the award, TSU, Jacksonville State and Austin Peay will receive monetary donations to their student-athlete academic enhancement programs. The funds, provided by Aeropostale, Inc., total $4,000 with TSU receiving $1,000.
In addition to the Academic Acheievement Banner, the OVC also announced its individual awards for 2003-04. The TSU women's cross county, women's track, and football teams all had seven athletes each named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll while the softball squad had six players honored.
