Track and Field Returns to Birmingham for Samford Bulldog Invite

LOCATION: Birmingham Crossplex  |  Birmingham, Ala.  

STARTING LINE: The Tennessee State men's and women's track and field teams trek to Birmingham, Alabama for Samford's Bulldog Invitational set for Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Events set for Friday begin at 5:30 p.m. while the Saturday start time is set for 9 a.m.

LAST TIME OUT: Two-sport athlete David Dorsey placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 13.80m while Michael Willilngham Jr. finished third in the weight throw, tossing the implement 15.71m. All three Flying Tigers who competed in the 60m dash preliminaries qualified for the semifinals - R'Lazon Brumfield who finished in 7.11 to place 19th, freshman Aristotle Huffman crossed the finish line at 7.14 and Xavier McKnight, 7.20.Michael Willingham Jr. led the Flying Tigers on day two of the UAB Green and Gold Invite winning the top spot in the shot put over nine competitors. The junior from Stone Mountain, Georgia, recorded a 14.78m toss, marking his personal best. Willingham was just one-of-three to place in the top five of their respecitive events. R'Lazon Brumfield finished second in the long jump, leaping 7.27m. While on the track, junior Christian Williams made it to the 60-meter hurdle finals, finishing fourth with a time of 8.47.

The Tigerbelles completed day one at the UAB Green and Gold Invitational with a second place finish for Mikayla Thompson in the weight throw and a fourth place finish for Angel Horton in the triple jump. On the track, Tyra Cullum and Grenetria Shell each qualified for the semi-finals in their respective events. Cullum crossed the 60-meter finish line in 8.04, while Shell finished 10th with a time of 8.65 in the 60-meter hurdles. The Tigerbelles wrapped day two of the UAB Green and Gold Invite with four top-five finishes in the final nine events of the two-day meet. Alysoune Coleman finished fourth of 28 competitors in the 400-meter dash crossing the line in 58.06. Grenetria Shell who qualified for the semifinals in the 60m hurdles, finished third with a time of 8.95, qualifying for the finals. Shell ran a 9.00 flat in the finals to place fifth. Mikayla Thompson marked a 15.11m performance in the weight throw to place second of 11 competitors, rounding out the women's track and field team's weekend. 

IN THE NATION: TSU junior R’Lazon Brumfield currently ranks 11th in the nation in the triple jump with a leap of 15.96m at the Purdue Fred Wilt Open, and 22nd in the nation in the long jump after a 7.62m mark at the Edward Temple Classic.  Mikayla Thompson ranks 62nd in the shot put thanks to her performance at the Jim Green Invite. 

UP NEXT: TSU will complete the indoor season at the OVC Indoor Championship in Birmingham, Alabama, Feb. 26-27.
