NASHVILLE - Sophomore R’Lazon Brumfield (Jacksonville, Fla.) has been named the Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year as announced by the conference office this afternoon.
Thanks to a record-breaking season, Brumfield owns the top distances in the Ohio Valley Conference in the long jump (25-10.75) and the triple jump (52-0). His long jump mark is 12th in the NCAA while his triple jump is 20th.
This marks the first time since 2016 an athlete has won both the indoor and outdoor Field Athlete of the Year Award, and the first time since 2003, a Flying Tiger has won both the indoor and outdoor Athlete of the Year Award (Nick Horton).
Throughout the outdoor season, Brumfield has amassed two Field Athlete of the Week awards and has set a new personal best in long jump at the Memphis Invite with a mark of 7.89m.
Over the course of his two years competing for Tennessee State, Brumfield has garnered ten major acheivements: OVC Freshman of the Year 2018, OVC Indoor Co-Field Athlete of the Year 2018 and 2019, OVC Indoor Championship MVP 2019, OVC Long Jump Indoor Champion 2018 and 2019, OVC Triple Jump Indoor Champion 2018 and 2019, TSU’s 2018-19 Male Athlete of the Year and finally the OVC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year 2019.
