A Pair of Flying Tigers Awarded OVC Athlete of the Week Honors

NASHVILLE — After a dazzling display in the outdoor season opener in the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech, sophomore R’Lazon Brumfield was award the Ohio Valley Conference Field Athlete of the Week and Ashley Bailey was named the OVC Track Athlete of the Week.

Bailey, a redshirt-junior from Indianapolis, Ind., Bailey finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. His time of 55.07 seconds is the first in the OVC this season and ranks 39th in the NCAA East Region.

Brumfield is coming off a prolific indoor season where he received three OVC Field Athlete of the Week awards, OVC Field Athlete of the Year and was named Athlete of the Indoor Championship.

At the Yellow Jacket Invitational, he finished second with a leap of 52-00.0 in the triple jump, which is tops in the OVC this season and the NCAA East Region. The mark ranks second in the nation this year. Brumfield also finished sixth in the long jump with a mark of 23-01.75.

Tennessee State is back in action Friday and Saturday for the Black and Gold Invitational at Vanderbilt. Field events begin at 4 p.m. on Friday. Running events will begin at noon on Saturday.
